![]() ![]() Spectacular Spectacular released a digital album on Soundcloud this last summer and I had the opportunity to talk with Isley Reust about the album Blur and break down some of the tracks and influences on a release that was three years in the making. In part one of this interview, we took a look at Isley, her struggles prior to transitioning and her re-emergence into what the Huffington Post referred to her as one of the ten trans names you should know, but now it’s time to talk about the music. Once you get through the initial shock of a career derailment, you will be able to start positively networking on sites like LinkedIn, Monster or Indeed. Yes, the cliché is true, it’s a full time job getting a full time job, but be willing to step outside of your comfort zone and be patient.“I’ve always have been into female artist mostly throughout my life and I’ve related with their music most,” Isley Reust of the band Spectacular Spectacular said to PlanetTransgender in an interview, “Shirley Manson from Garbage was my number one influence growing up.” ![]() Manage your Expectations: Once you’ve got your plan in place, start sending out resumes to companies that interest you, not ones that you will settle for. They always say ‘aim high,’ but I’m suggesting you ‘aim towards the middle’ and work your way back up. You were willing to prove your worth when you were younger, it’s now time to show potential employers that you are willing to prove your worth in your later years. If you are a project manager and want to get into project management, get your certificate in Scrum or become a Certified Product Owner. Numerous colleges now offer a plethora of certificate programs and boot camps in digital marketing and Stack Skills offers a full stack digital certificate for less than $100.00. Yes, it may bite into your budget, but updating your skills for the new post-pandemic work environment will pay off in the end.ĥ. Update your Skillset: It may be time to go back to school. Evaluate you Hard Skills: You didn’t get to where you were at in your previous career with generic soft skills. You don’t have to start at the bottom, but you may need to be willing to take lesser paying positions in order to work your way back into a decent salary. Before you start sending your resume out, have a compelling story about what you have accomplished and be confident that you can repeat that success.Ĥ. Get Your Finances in Order: Sudden life changes are just that…sudden, and they will often be followed with a question about how you are sitting financially. So many articles emphasize that you need at least a years’ worth of savings in your account to help you ride through the potentially upcoming drought of work. Be excited about the future and get ready to throw yourself into something new. You may need to seek help through therapy or a support group look for someone in your life that is positive and set up a lunch meeting with them. Getting your attitude back on track is going to be your number one priority.Ģ. Within a year, I was back in retail, a place I hadn’t been since I was in college.Ĭomplaining about a career derailment only makes things worse, but if I had a dime for everytime someone told me to ‘get over it,’ well, I’d have quite a few dimes. As I continue to try and rebuild my career, here are a few things I’ve learned along the way.ġ. The last time I held a Director or SVP position was in 2016, a year after a major life event derailed my career in the music industry. Truth be told, the music industry had collapsed ten years earlier with the disappearance of a physical music format and retail and labels almost ceased to exist within a year. Music industry aside, this life event was enough to completely disrupt my career path moving forward. “Where do you see yourself in 5 years” was a much often asked question during the interview process in the 90’s and 00’s. The answer was a padded answer that saw growth within the company you were applying for or maybe you added a personal touch of a life with a spouse, kids and a healthy career. At no point did I ever image that life in 5 years would include unemployment in my late 50’s due to a major life event while suffering from imposter syndrome. ![]()
